Discord Server Templates — Best Templates by Category + Copy-Paste Layouts

August 2, 2026 · 11 min read

A Discord server template is a pre-built server structure you can clone in one click — it includes channels, categories, roles, and permissions already set up. Instead of building a server from scratch you apply a template and get a working server layout instantly. This guide covers the best templates by category, how to use them, and copy-paste text templates for rules, welcome messages, and channel descriptions.

What Is a Discord Server Template

A Discord server template saves your server's structure — channels, categories, roles, and permission settings — as a shareable link. Anyone can use that link to create a new server with the exact same layout in seconds.

What templates include:

  • Channel categories and channels
  • Role names and hierarchy
  • Channel permissions per role
  • Channel topics and descriptions

What templates do NOT include:

  • Messages or chat history
  • Bot configurations or bot permissions
  • Custom emojis or stickers
  • Server boosts or boost perks
  • Members or invites

Templates are a starting point — you still need to add bots, invite members, and customize the details after applying.

How to Use a Discord Server Template

Create a new server from a template:

  1. Click the + icon in the server list on the left sidebar
  2. Select Create My Own
  3. Click Create from a template at the bottom
  4. Paste the template link or use Discord's built-in template gallery
  5. Name your server and click Create

Apply a template to an existing server: Discord does not support applying templates to existing servers natively. To use a template on an existing server you need the Xenon bot (xenon.bot) which can load templates into servers you already own.

Copy a Discord server template without admin: If you find a template link online you can use it to create a new server without needing admin access to the original server. Template links are public — anyone with the link can clone the structure.

How to Create a Discord Server Template

You can save your own server as a template to share with others:

  1. Open your server → click the server name at the top left
  2. Select Server Settings
  3. Click Template in the left sidebar under Community
  4. Click Generate a Template
  5. Give your template a name and description
  6. Click Generate Template — this creates a shareable link

The link format is: discord.new/TEMPLATECODE

Templates auto-update as you make changes to your server structure. You can sync or delete the template anytime from Server Settings → Template.

Discord Server Template Best Practices

Start with a template then customize: Templates give you a foundation — the real work is adjusting it to your community's needs. Add bots, customize permissions, and rename channels after applying the template.

Keep channels organized with categories: Group related channels under clear category names. Too many channels without categories makes navigation confusing. Aim for 3-6 channels per category maximum.

Set up roles before inviting members: Create your role hierarchy before people join. It is much harder to reorganize roles after a server has active members.

Use channel topics: Every channel should have a short topic line explaining what it's for. Members can see topics by clicking the channel name. This reduces off-topic posts.

Archive instead of delete: When a channel is no longer needed, make it visible only to staff rather than deleting it. You may need the history later.

Lock down permissions by default: New members should have the minimum permissions needed. Grant more access as members earn trust or get verified roles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Discord server template is a shareable link that clones a server's channel structure, categories, roles, and permissions. Anyone can use the link to create a new server with the same layout instantly. Templates save the structure only — they do not include messages, bots, members, or custom emojis.
Click the + icon in your server list → Create My Own → Create from a template → paste the template link → name your server → Create. The new server launches with all the channels, categories, and roles from the template already set up.
Template links are public — you do not need admin access to the original server to use a template. Find the template link, paste it in the Create Server flow, and clone the structure into a new server you own.
Discord does not natively support applying templates to existing servers. To do this use the Xenon bot (xenon.bot) — it can load templates into servers you already own by syncing the channel and role structure.
Go to Server Settings → Template → Generate a Template → add a name and description → Generate Template. This creates a shareable discord.new link. The template auto-updates when you make structural changes to your server.
The Gaming Template on xenon.bot (1.9M uses) and Simple Server Template (229K uses) are the most popular gaming templates. Both include gaming voice channels, game-specific text channels, and role structures for clans and communities.
A Discord server template includes channel categories, text and voice channels, role names and hierarchy, and permission settings per role. It does not include messages, bot configurations, custom emojis, server boosts, or members.
