Discord installation has failed means the Discord setup process could not complete successfully on your device. Fix it by ending all Discord background processes, deleting the Discord folders in %AppData% and %LocalAppData%, restarting your computer, then running a fresh installer as administrator. Most cases resolve with this single sequence of steps.
Why Does Discord Installation Fail
The "Installation Has Failed" error appears when the Discord installer cannot write files to your system. Common causes:
- Old or corrupted Discord files left from a previous installation
- A Discord process still running in the background during installation
- Insufficient permissions — installer not running as administrator
- Antivirus blocking Discord's installation files
- Not enough disk space
- Corrupted installer file downloaded
- Windows compatibility issues
Fix 1 — End All Discord Processes and Delete AppData Folders
This is Discord's official recommended fix and resolves the installation failed error for most users:
Step 1 — End all Discord processes:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager
- Look for any process named Discord or Update.exe
- Right-click each one and select End Task
- Also check the Startup tab and disable Discord if it appears there
Step 2 — Delete Discord AppData folders:
- Press Win+R and type
%appdata%→ press Enter - Find the Discord folder and delete it completely
- Press Win+R again and type
%localappdata%→ press Enter - Find the Discord folder and delete it completely
Step 3 — Restart your computer
Step 4 — Download fresh installer: Go to discord.com/download and download the latest Discord installer
Step 5 — Run as administrator: Right-click the downloaded installer → select Run as administrator → click Yes
Fix 2 — Set Compatibility Mode
If the installation still fails after Fix 1 set Windows compatibility mode:
- After installing navigate to
%localappdata%\Discord - Find the most recent app-X.X.XXXX folder and open it
- Find discord.exe inside
- Right-click → Properties → Compatibility tab
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode for
- Select Windows 8 (or try Windows 7 if Windows 8 does not work)
- Also check Run this program as an administrator
- Click Apply and OK
- Try launching Discord
Fix 3 — Disable Antivirus During Installation
Antivirus software frequently blocks Discord's installation files causing the failed error:
- Open your antivirus settings
- Temporarily disable real-time protection
- Download a fresh Discord installer from discord.com
- Run the installer as administrator
- Once Discord is installed successfully re-enable your antivirus
For Windows Defender specifically:
- Open Windows Security → Virus & Threat Protection
- Click Manage Settings under Virus & threat protection settings
- Toggle Real-time protection off
- Install Discord
- Toggle real-time protection back on
Fix 4 — Check Disk Space
Discord requires approximately 500MB of free disk space to install:
- Open File Explorer
- Right-click your C: drive → Properties
- Check available free space
- If low free up space by deleting temporary files or moving files to another drive
- Try installing Discord again
Fix 5 — Download Discord From Microsoft Store
If the standard installer keeps failing try installing from the Microsoft Store:
- Open the Microsoft Store on Windows
- Search for Discord
- Click Install
The Microsoft Store version installs differently and bypasses some of the issues that cause the standard installer to fail.
Fix 6 — Use Revo Uninstaller for Clean Removal
If Discord is partially installed and cannot be removed normally use Revo Uninstaller:
- Download Revo Uninstaller from revouninstaller.com (free version works)
- Run Revo Uninstaller
- Find Discord in the list and uninstall completely
- Revo will scan for and remove leftover registry entries and files
- Restart your computer
- Download and install Discord fresh from discord.com
Fix 7 — Run Windows Installer Troubleshooter
Windows has a built-in installer troubleshooter that can fix installation issues:
- Press Win+R and type
msdt.exe /id PCDiagnostic - Or search for "Troubleshoot settings" in Start menu
- Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
- Follow the prompts to detect and fix installation issues
- Try installing Discord again after the troubleshooter completes
Fix 8 — Install Discord on Mac
If you are on Mac and see the installation has failed error:
- Open Finder → Applications → drag Discord to Trash
- Open Finder → press Cmd+Shift+G
- Type
~/Library/Application Support/and delete the discord folder - Empty the Trash
- Restart your Mac
- Download the latest Discord for Mac from discord.com
- Open the .dmg file and drag Discord to Applications

| Install from Microsoft Store | 2 minutes | Installer keeps failing |
| Revo Uninstaller | 5 minutes | Partial installation stuck |
| Windows troubleshooter | 3 minutes | System-level issue |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Not deleting BOTH AppData folders — You must delete the Discord folder from BOTH %appdata% and %localappdata%. Deleting only one leaves corrupted files that prevent reinstallation.
Not running the installer as administrator — The single most common cause of persistent installation failure. Always right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
Not restarting between uninstall and reinstall — Restart your computer after deleting the AppData folders. This clears file locks that prevent the new installation from writing files.
Using an old cached installer — Always download a fresh installer from discord.com. A previously downloaded installer may be corrupted or outdated.
Closing Task Manager too early — Make sure ALL Discord processes are ended before deleting the AppData folders. Check both the Processes and Details tabs in Task Manager.
