Discord Loading Chunk Failed Error — How to Fix It Fast

July 31, 2026 · 5 min read

Discord loading chunk failed means the app cannot download necessary JavaScript or asset files due to corrupted cache data or a network block. Fix it by pressing Ctrl+R to refresh Discord, clearing your cache folders, or reinstalling the app. Most cases resolve in under 2 minutes.

What Is the Discord Loading Chunk Failed Error

The loading chunk failed error appears when Discord cannot load a required piece of code or asset — called a "chunk" — from its servers. You typically see a message like:

  • "Loading chunk X failed"
  • "Error loading chunk"
  • A blank white or gray screen with an error overlay

This error appears on both the desktop app and the browser version of Discord. It is almost always caused by corrupted local cache files or something blocking Discord's connection to its asset servers.

Fix 1 — Press Ctrl+R to Refresh

The fastest fix:

Desktop app: Press Ctrl+R on Windows or Cmd+R on Mac

Browser: Press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Cmd+Shift+R on Mac for a hard refresh that bypasses the browser cache

Most temporary loading chunk errors resolve with a single refresh. If the error returns after refreshing move to the next fix.

Fix 2 — Clear Discord Cache

Corrupted cache files are the most common cause of the loading chunk failed error:

Windows:

  1. Fully close Discord from the system tray
  2. Press Win+R → type %appdata% → press Enter
  3. Open the discord folder
  4. Delete these folders:
    • Cache
    • Code Cache
    • GPUCache
    • Local Storage
  5. Press Win+R again → type %localappdata%
  6. Find and delete the Discord folder
  7. Restart Discord

Mac:

  1. Quit Discord completely
  2. Open Finder → press Cmd+Shift+G
  3. Type ~/Library/Application Support/discord
  4. Delete the Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache folders
  5. Restart Discord

Fix 3 — Disable VPN or Ad Blocker

VPNs and ad blockers can block Discord from loading its required JavaScript chunks:

Desktop app:

  • Disable any active VPN and restart Discord
  • Disable antivirus web protection temporarily and test

Browser:

  • Disable any ad blocker extensions for discord.com
  • Disable VPN browser extensions
  • Try opening Discord in an incognito window — this disables all extensions automatically

If Discord loads correctly in incognito mode an extension is causing the loading chunk error.

Fix 4 — Clear Browser Cache (Browser Version)

If you use Discord in a browser:

Chrome:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete
  2. Select Cached images and files
  3. Click Clear data
  4. Reload Discord

Firefox:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete
  2. Select Cache
  3. Click Clear Now
  4. Reload Discord

Edge:

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete
  2. Select Cached images and files
  3. Click Clear now

Fix 5 — Reinstall Discord

If clearing cache does not resolve the error a clean reinstall removes all corrupted files:

Windows:

  1. End all Discord processes in Task Manager
  2. Uninstall Discord from Settings → Apps
  3. Press Win+R → type %appdata% → delete the discord folder
  4. Press Win+R → type %localappdata% → delete the Discord folder
  5. Download fresh installer from discord.com
  6. Install and log back in

Mac:

  1. Quit Discord and drag it to Trash
  2. Delete ~/Library/Application Support/discord
  3. Download Discord from discord.com and reinstall

Fix 6 — Switch Networks

If the loading chunk error only appears on one network try switching:

  • Switch from WiFi to mobile data hotspot
  • Try a different WiFi network
  • Flush DNS with ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt
  • Change DNS to Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Frequently Asked Questions

Discord loading chunk failed means the app cannot download a required JavaScript or asset file from Discord's servers. This is usually caused by corrupted cache files or something blocking the connection. Clear the Cache, Code Cache, and GPUCache folders from %appdata%\Discord and restart Discord.
Press Ctrl+R to refresh Discord first. If the error persists clear the Discord cache folders from %appdata%\Discord — delete Cache, Code Cache, GPUCache, and Local Storage. If you use Discord in a browser disable ad blockers and clear browser cache. As a last resort reinstall Discord.
Discord keeps showing loading chunk error when cache files are persistently corrupted or when a VPN, ad blocker, or antivirus is blocking Discord from downloading its required files. Clear the full Discord cache from both %appdata% and %localappdata%, disable any extensions, and reinstall Discord if the error continues.
Not usually — this error is almost always caused by local cache corruption or a network block rather than Discord server issues. Check discordstatus.com to confirm Discord is operating normally then clear your local cache to resolve the error.
